Simply amazing :) This could happen only on a Dublin bus

n ‘Don’t take me drugs away,’ the Irish man on the bus addresses the bittersweet relationship between the addict and the drug; through satirising his own love/ hate relationship with drugs. On the one hand, the addict hates drugs. It is the cause of the entirety of his life’s ills: ‘a life of misery and sorrow’; and the ills of his friends: ‘they don’t know they have HIV.’

On the other hand it is the only thing he has in his life and to take his drugs away would be truly awful: ‘Don’t take me drugs away. I can hardly see through yesterday. How the fuck am I supposed to see tomorrow?’ The addict needs the drugs both psychologically and physically to get through the day. This is reinforced through the lines, ‘cold turkey doesn’t fit, it make me feel like fucking shit.’ Clearly, the fears attached with going through the physical and psychological effects of opium withdrawal are greater than the desire to give up the drug.

The singer is therefore not advocating that people should do drugs. He is merely stating that once you start with certain drugs, it is incredibly difficult to stop.

Meanwhile the reactions of the passengers of the bus represents societies ambiguous attitude towards addiction and homelessness. Despite people clearly listening and enjoying the music as is evident by the smirks and sniggers of passengers, people are making a deliberate effort ignore the man singing. Even the camera is sneakily positioned, as to make it seem that they are not actually filming him.

Are the people on the bus giving him what he wants, ignoring him, and thus not taking his drugs away? Or is the song really a desperate call for help by a lonely, homeless and yet clearly talented man, who actually does want people to take his drugs away. ‘How the fuck am I suppose to see tomorrow?’ The addict knows tomorrow will only come if somebody does take his drugs away.

Either way, the song demonstrates on one hand the addicts bittersweet relationship with drugs, and at another societies lack of understanding of addiction.
